We all live life at the speed of lightning. Everything is fast-paced and we are all expected to keep up. Most of us busy mums have so much on our plates that we never have any time for just us! We schedule everything into our planners except some self-care time to recharge and relax from the stresses of life.
Self-care doesn’t need to be about a full or half-day spent at the spa – that would be amazing don’t get me wrong but that’s not how life works. Self-care can just be about pencilling in half an hour to get your manicure done, get your hair removal on or even just reading something that isn’t about improving your Instagram following, feeding your kids or renovating your home (unless that’s what you want to read!).

Here are my top 5 self-care ideas and tips to help you relax:
1. Salon-Style Facial
If you’re anything like me you must be dreaming of the chance to get a salon facial done. But, hey ho, we just don’t have the time to go to one, right? And the next best thing happens to be an at-home salon facial. I’ve searched around and these ones (US links) happen to be quite good. Yes, they are from Amazon but you all know why I love Amazon and why I shop for all my essentials there.

2. Mani-Pedi
With lockdown restrictions in place, we all had to make do with a mani-pedi that we made ourselves…however beautiful (or not) that may have been. Everyone knows clean and tidy nails really say a lot about you and I have definitely been lacking in that department. Here are some of my favourite manicure sets (US links) that you can use at home.

3. Laser Hair Removal
When it comes to hair removal, I use a mixture of treatments depending on the body area I need to deal with. For the legs and bikini area, I use the good old razor. Arms and upper lip gets the hair removal cream treatment. For my underarms, I use wax – and sometimes on my arms too depending on my mood. Now for my facial hair removal, I use a 2-part system: my dermaplaning tool* which I have recently really become fond of, and my home laser hair removal machine.
Dermaplaning
I first use the dermaplaning tool* to remove all the excess hair on my face by shaving it off. Yes, you read right. I shave my face. It actually sounds much worse than it is. No, it’s not like a man shaves his face, it’s different.
Dermaplaning the skin involves you removing the peach fuzz and dead skin cells. This is a good step to incorporate into your skincare routine before applying makeup. It preps the skin so you can achieve a flawless makeup application. The dermaplaning tool* exfoliates your skin without causing any pain, irritation or redness.
I use my dermaplaning tool* to prep my skin for laser removal. NB: I don’t tend to use the laser on the same day I have shaved my face so please do your own research beforehand. I am by no means a doctor or medical professional!

The shaving preps my face by removing all the long hairs and I use this laser treatment to achieve (near to) permanent hair removal. I find it pretty painless and worth the purchase as it is currently one of the best home laser machines on the market.

4. Journaling
I always thought that journaling was a little flimsy and only for those who are more spiritual. When I came across the Daily Greatness Journal I thought I would give it a go and see if it actually works. And boy was I blown away with the results. Everything I had journaled over the period of a few months eventually manifested.
The power of thinking and writing down your thoughts is strong. Stronger than you may think and even if you don’t believe in all that (as I didn’t before but totally do now) it is worth trying as writing down your thoughts is a good outlet for getting your mind in order.

5. Meditation
Meditation allows you to clear your mind and organise your thoughts taking you away from the chaos of the moment. It enables you to step out of your mind and block out all the stress and focus on your breathing. You could even try a mantra that accesses your consciousness.
If you cannot find time in your busy day to get any self-care into your day then at least try practising meditation. Try it before you go to bed or even before you jump into the shower. It will bring some order into your body and mind that you will no doubt be thankful for.
