The first thing that anyone notices when they first walk into a room is the brightness. If they feel like they can’t see or the room is too dark and moody then they immediately can be put off by the space. This is especially important if you want to either sell a property or brighter any dark room into something fun for friends and family. So if you have a room that you wish to brighten what can you do about it?

Clean the windows

Forgetting to clean your windows thoroughly on a regular basis can result in a build-up of dirt and grime that can seriously block light in extreme cases. If you haven’t done so in a while, deep clean your windows and if necessary, hire someone to do the outside for you. Removing all the dirt is a great and low-cost place to start.

Add a new window or skylight

A bit of an extreme option but sometimes a necessity for awkwardly placed rooms or conservatories. Adding a new window, french doors or a roof lantern can really bring a room to life by extending the time the natural light can reach it. They can be expensive so be sure to shop around and use a reputable company to have them installed. If a roof lantern is something you want to consider then check out rooflanternsolutions.co.uk. There are plenty of options and styles so you can find one that suits you to help brighten any dark room.

Clever mirror placement

Utilise your lights by placing mirrors near them. If you have a standalone lamp consider hanging a wall mirror behind it to help reflect the light further and brighten your room even more. Clever placement and utilising your space properly are the keys to subtly brightening rooms without breaking the bank.

Repainting with bright colours

Put simply; what looks brighter? A room painted black or a room painted white? The darker the paint or wallpaper, the darker the room will be. This is a bit of a no brainer but it can be difficult to balance this with someones personal tastes. Some people want dark rooms to match darker furniture. If this is you, then you will need to use some of the other ideas presented here.

Change the furniture

Along with dark decoration, dark furniture can make a room appear duller than it actually is. Embracing a lighter colour pallet for your furniture is a perfect way to add brightness to a room, but obviously comes with a compromise on personal tastes and expense. A good example would be to swap out a dining room table from a wooden one to a glass one. Consider who the room is for and why you are wanting to brighten it, especially if it means spending a good sum of money on new furniture.

Smaller light sources

Small and innocuous light sources can provide much-needed light without overpowering the room and the look. Small fairy lights that can be hidden in plain sight or small LED strips that can be hidden out of sight are a great way to brighten any dark room. Consider how they are going to be powered and if you require extra sockets or constant battery changes in order to keep them lit.
