As a treatment, laser hair removal has seen a significant increase in popularity over recent years. Loved by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian West, it has several key benefits which can really help people who may be struggling with unwanted body hair. I had laser hair removal years ago done on my arms, underarms, bikini line and face and know just how effective it can be.

To help those who may want some more information about laser hair removal, I spoke with Tania Zahoor Rashid, one of the founders and directors of Aesthetics Lab. From its London clinic, Aesthetics Lab has established itself as a leading provider of skin and body treatments, including laser hair removal.
“Laser hair removal is the go-to treatment for hair reduction in the 21st century,” Tania told us. “A lot of people are having it done, women and men alike” and there are a lot of clinics offering the treatment. So, what are the benefits of laser hair removal?
Target any part of your body
One of the key benefits of laser hair removal is that it can target hair on any part of your body. This can differ from person to person, but Tania told us, that in her experience, men are more commonly having the treatment done on their back, shoulder, ears, monobrow and nose. “We have definitely seen more men wanting to have laser hair removal done,” Tania said. The women who have come to Aesthetics Lab for laser hair removal are mostly looking to have the treatment carried out on their legs, underarms and bikini area.
It removes hair permanently
If you are struggling with unwanted body hair, then the continual cycle of shaving or waxing an area can be frustrating. Laser hair removal provides a more permanent alternative because of how it removes the hair. Using a laser to emit light over a specific area, this light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. This light energy is then converted into heat, causing damage to the hair follicle and halting future hair growth. The whole process provides effective and long-lasting results.

Accessible to a variety of people
As mentioned above, both men and women see the benefits of laser hair removal. The treatment can be carried out on any skin tone and colour, as long as the correct equipment is used. However, there are some things to keep in mind if you’re interested. Tania told us that at Aesthetics Lab, “we do not recommend laser hair removal for young people under 18, simply because their hormones will make the treatment less effective. They may see a reduction; however, the results won’t be what we would expect with hair regrowth and the need to repeat a course.”
Tania also highlighted that women planning pregnancies are encouraged to wait until they have finished breastfeeding to have the treatment. Also, some hair colours may pose difficulties. “Very light or grey hair will not be treated by laser due to the pigment being very light (or none at all). Therefore the laser cannot treat the hair follicle as it doesn’t detect it,” Tania explained.
Does it hurt?
Thanks to improved technology and cooling systems, laser hair removal has seen a significant reduction in the pain experienced during the treatment. According to Tania, laser hair treatment used to be quite painful, but it has improved significantly. This makes it much easier to complete the multiple treatment sessions required for the best possible results.
Verdict
Overall, laser hair removal has several key benefits which make it an excellent option for people looking for a permanent alternative to shaving or waxing. It is important to speak with a professional about laser hair removal to find out if it’s right for you before committing to any treatment. Many thanks to Tania for her help with this post.
