The third part of the Beauty Guide series is all about the use of bicarbonate of soda in my beauty routine. Soda has been a great handy item to have around the home. From cleaning to cooking it can be used to help out with many challenges in your life. For example, my mum swears by using soda to clean the gas hob, wash out the coffee and tea stains in our mugs and even use soda to whiten your teeth. I myself, love using soda for my beauty and skincare routines.

Ultimate Beauty Guide: 7 Handy Uses of Bicarbonate of Soda

Bicarbonate of soda isn’t just for cooking and baking. Yes that is its main purpose, but there are many more benefits including cleaning, cooking and of course beauty and skincare benefits. There are many benefits of using bicarbonate of soda in your skincare routine, and here are my favourite uses:

Please note that if you have a sensitivity to bicarbonate of soda then please do not use this guide and please note that I am not a medical profession and can only report what I have tried myself.

1. Teeth Whitening

I love to use bicarbonate of soda to whiten my teeth. Soda contains antibacterial components so it works wonders all around. It’s as simple as adding some soda onto your toothbrush with your toothpaste and brushing as usual. I do this once a week and keeps my teeth white and healthy!

Please do note however that this should not form part of your usual everyday toothpaste and soda does not contain fluoride (which helps prevent cavities) – so before attempting anything new, please consult with your dentist. I am not a medical professional and this is not medical advice.

2. Facial Cleanser

I add bicarbonate of soda into my normal cleanser once a week. I literally use the normal amount of my usual cleanser and add a little bit of the soda to it. I add a few drops of water and mix the new paste in my hands. Then I apply it to my face for a gentle exfoliation. I can actually feel the mixture (and soda) working its magic on my face as it scrubs and exfoliates the dead skin cells.

3. Face Mask

You can make a great cleansing and exfoliating face mask using bicarbonate of soda at home. Just mix one teaspoon of soda with warm honey (no more than 45 degrees), wish a few drops of lemon. This mixture is then applied to your face and left on your face for 10-15 minutes and wash off with warm water. Please do not use this is you’re allergic to honey – obviously you wouldn’t be reading this post if you’re allergic to bicarbonate of soda. In addition if you have sensitive skin then you should be careful when using this mask. I suggest using this mask once a week only!

4. Dry Shampoo

Who doesn’t need to use dry shampoo on their hair. It comes in handy when you haven’t had the time to wash your hair and look a little oily on top. This is where the use of bicarbonate of soda is definitely quite handy. If you have run out of dry shampoo then just use a few sprinkles of soda onto your roots and either brush through or rub in with your fingertips. This will absorb any excess oil and you’re left with fresh hair.

5. Deodorant

Another great benefit of using bicarbonate of soda is that it acts as a neutraliser against bad odours and therefore deals with sweat very well. Just pat some soda under your armpits and you should be feeling much more fresh.

6. Mouthwash

Mouthwash is important for reaching the parts of your mouth and teeth where brushing alone could not reach. A great and handy use of bicarbonate of soda is the ability to use it as a mouthwash (especially handy when you have run out). Soda mouthwash can be made by mixing 1/2 a teaspoon of soda with water and swishing the mixture in your mouth (as you would your normal store-bought mouthwash).

7. Clean your styling tools

The last, and most important use of bicarbonate soda is as a cleaning solution for your styling & beauty tools. This includes your brushes and combs. Just soak them in a bowl of warm water and one teaspoon of baking soda – this will remove natural oils and build up. Then just rinse and dry.
